I managed to pull out a old sega genesis and am interested in trying
to hook up a CD-ROM system to it. I have searched the net for ideas on
doing this but can only find info in making blank cartridges and
loading roms from a computer to the blank cartridge using a parallel
connection.

This is a start, but is there a way I can do this by using a CD-ROM?
Maybe using the same style but getting a IDE drive to load the 4MB of
data into the memory then switching the system on.

Take a look at Sega CD, that's definitely a starting point.
