Second opinion needed (VCR picture fault)

Hi folks! Am looking for a second opinion on a VCR...

The heads were dirty, so I cleaned them. Tried a tape - no picture.
Cleaned again - picture returns. Reassembled vcr, recorded a tv
program. When playing back, only a perfectly black screen but has
audio. TV reception (picture and sound) is passing through VCR to TV
fine. Tried to play a prerecorded tape - no picture - sound is
fine...

Went away, came back an hour later and it's working again!? BUT...

About 1/16th of screen, right at the bottom, the picture has no color.
The top half of this small section is smeared downwards - looks just
like a painting left out in the rain - AND - the bottom half of that
section is just noise/hash. (So it's normal, then black & white
smear, then black & white hash.)

Since it's at the bottom of the screen, I thought it might be the
vcr's right-hand side tape path or take up guides. But forcing the
tape up or down doesn't affect the problem. Same with the pinch
roller - it's not the fault either.

I've already got an opinion what it is - but what about you guys -
what's your diagnosis?

Allan.
