Hi,

I wonder how I can search in the solutions on sourcelink. Finding the
article by use of the number is no problem, but how can I tell the search
engine to _only_ search within the solutions and not in the reference
manuals?

Hi Svenn,

clicking on "More Options" and selcting "Troubleshooting and FAQ's" at the
"Search within" will deliver mostly solutions.

Hope it helps,
Marc

But...
click 'more options' and then 'search within'->'troubleshooting and faqs'.
it's not exactly the solutions only as it was before, but it nevertheless narrows
the search range a lot.

One option which I've always wanted is "search everywhere except
the manuals" (given I'd probably searched the manuals anyway), and
seeing the same match in 10 versions of the manual is not very
helpful... I have asked my colleagues who look after sourcelink,
but it's never made it yet, unfortunately.

Andrew.

I submitted a feedback report on Sourcelink. I promptly got a reply
from a nice person (yes a real person, no automated replies) that
Cadence is currently in the process of upgrading Sourcelink and they
will consider my request. Well that was over a year ago.

Sourcelink's look has since been updated. So they sent me an e-mail
asking me if I was satisfied now!

The SourceLink searching issues were a big downside raised at last
year's ICU meeting. I know that the folks in charge were looking at
some options (I specifically suggested a Google Appliance to them,
though they're costly); I'll ping them and report back here.

Thank you for taking the cause of the customer.

While the Google Appliance has familiarity on its side, I don't think
a Google Appliance is the best solution for technical documents. A much
better search system, I think, is the kind used by IEEEXplore. Just my
2 cents.

Well, where SourceLink is concerned, we're all customers. :) I share
our users' frustration with the current search mechanism.

Indeed; I heard back from our Global Customer Support group, and they
echoed this finding. There are some neat features provided by the
Google Appliance (the interface is second-to-none), but the core
searching technology doesn't work so well for us. Ah, well.

A much
better search system, I think, is the kind used by IEEEXplore. Just my

One issue we have is the lack of metadata (keywords and the like) on our
documents; IEEE's search mechanism works well on their documents, but
would likely not do such a great job on ours as things stand. This is
something that the support group is aware of and working on.

Things are still in flux so I can't provide any specifics, but the folks
who are working on this are very responsive and receptive to feedback.
They've identified a number of requirements that hadn't even crossed my
mind (e.g., making sure Kanji searches still work). So watch this
space; with a bit of luck and a lot of hard work, we'll be able to
provide some good news on this front...
