I'm looking for a source for the above type of encoder.

Basically it's a serrated wheel (like the volume knob on a miniature
radio) but with detent stops.

In normal use, the wheel will generate a quaderature(?) output but
with additional pressure, the switch function is made.

Any pointers gratefully received.

A mouse with a wheel?
Exactly the same concept but on a smaller scale (and without the
mouse!).

This is the type I'm looking for:

http://www.panasonic.com/industrial/components/pdf/ATC0000CE6.pdf

I remember seeing an open frame version recently advertised in the
editorial section of one on the Connecting Industry magazines (UK) but
I can't find the reference.

Grayhill series 62A optical rotary encoder, 32 positions per
revolution, with mechanical detents, with pushbutton-switch function.
Grayhill #62A11-02-020S (2" cable) or -050S (5" cable). Available
from Digi-Key.

I don't think you'll like the price.

Mechanical encoders (with contacts rather than optoelectronics) are a
good deal less expensive, but I don't know of any which have the
pushbutton function. Cherry might make one, perhaps.

They are available, such as these ones I'm selling,

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3824621876&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

But I think the OP wants something more like an old-fashioned
transistor radio volume control. Probably Alps make them.

Most of the searches turn up encoders like the ones described by Dave
and yourself. As you rightly said, I need the side wheel version like
the Panasonic types described in my second post.

Thanks for both of your replies anyway.

Regards,
Mike
