The ghost lines are probably from the previous owner leaving the display on
and to bright for to long.

You're seeing the square wave on the retrace of the beam. The electron
beam is supposed to be blanked during the sweep retrace (the return to
the left side of the screen) but it's leaking through. Some scopes
just do this if you turn the intensity way up; or there may be
something wrong, possibly a bad part, posssibly an adjustment, in the
intensity/blanking circuits. The low-end scopes often use a cheap
pseudo-DC coupled blanking circuit that doesn't work well at high
intensity.

Chris,

Try this

Lower the intensity and adjust the focus. The beam should be a good
picture.

Next, adjust the triggle level for a stable trace.

If there is a backlight, lower it.

To me you have the intensity way too high.

...... and if that fails try adjusting the trigger level.

You've got the intensity WAY TOO HIGH!

First, turn the intensity down. That should also stop the trace from
blurring all over the place like a spray gun. But don't even try to focus
it until you turn the intensity down to a sane level.

Good Luck!
