Scientists say deepening Arctic snowpack drives greenhouse gas emissions...

This kind of thing dwarfs mankind\'s GHG emissions. And it\'s not a \"could\'ve\" but something happening right, nothing can be done about it. Just one more sign that it\'s over for the human race.

\"Deeper snow acts like a blanket, insulating the ground that warmed up in the summer from cold air temperatures. This causes the permafrost to thaw, which allows microorganisms to consume the previously frozen organic matter and, in the process, release planet-warming gases.\"

So, if there is more snow we are all going to die (ice age) and if there
is less snow we are all going to die (warming planet)?

Not much in between is there?

All humans on the planet will die. Probably next Tuesday.

Fred will be SO pleased.

I predict that within two hundred years that everyone who is currently
living will be dead. Some of us will die sooner, the rest will be
somewhat later.

Our descendants will live on of course, \'cause that is what happens.

Chances are good that aging will be corrected by genetic therapies.
Probably not in our lifetimes.

Two oldish people can get together and make a nice fresh baby, so we
have it in us.

That would be a neat trick. A lot of ageing is the genome not being copied right from one generation of cells to the next in one individual. Different cells have different patterns of methylation so theeyuse the same genome to do different jobs. Correcting the mistakes and leaving the methylation untouched might be tricky.

About 30% of pregnancies miscarry in the first three months of pregnancy - what ever we\'ve got in us isn\'t 100% reliable. It get less so as we get older.

The arctic snow wouldn\'t be a problem if it didn\'t recede during the warmer months and allow the tundra to start thawing. When snow does return it\'s probably getting deeper because warmer air holds more water vapor and therefore produces more precipitation. The Inuit can attest to the insulating properties of snow.

Darius the dumb is the fake here. CO2, methane and N2O are all greenhouse gases.

So what?

A a does seem to be our leading resident spammer. His ideas about climate change don\'t seem to have any scientific basis at all.

This is the message we would like you to get. Echoing it back at us shows a depressing - if familiar - lack of originality.

You\'ve got all of that wrong.

No - that\'s what you do.

I am a doctor (if not a medical one) and my medical friends don\'t seem to think I need anything of the sort.

You don\'t seem to have a brain at all, or you\'d find more plausible abuse.

That\'s mainly a crock. The processes of microorganisms on frozen organic matter in deep soils
are presumably just as likely to make coal of plant matter as they are to release gasses.
As long as microorganisms are active, they themselves are carbon compounds, not gaseous
in nature. So, yeah, a snowpack over land in the Arctic will emit some methane, but
how much of the Arctic is really over land, not salt water? And how much organic matter
is likely to be left in the Antarctic, which has had the snowpack continuously for eons?

I suspect this is a minor blip, probably only gonna be important for a decade or so.
