Sanyo VHR-S700E Problem

Hi, I have an (admittadly old) Sanyo VHR-S700E video recorder. This
VCR is approx. 15 years old and is an SVHS machine. However I'm having
a problem with it; the spools do not move at all! Tape functions
affected are forward wind, rewind, play, etc.

I have tried to look at where the idler is however my vcr dosen't seem
to use a type at all instead it's using from what I can see a small
cog. I've also examined the capstan and brake; at first I suspected
this as it would hardly turn but the capstan's brake is on the
underside of the VCR. Apon removing the belt from the underside of the
VCR from 2 wheels (underside of VCR) and moving the brake back the
capstan turned much more freely (not quite as free as another VCR I
checked, trying the same operation).

I have heard that a spring, when it gets weak in this VCR can
intermittently leave the brakes on however I've looked at the capstan
brakes while in use and the brakes do seem to move away just enough so
that they are not "on". I've also tried using a casette cheater to see
what's going on with no real results.

Oddly the vcr will attempt to play (badly) from cold power up but
after playing or just selecting any other function (forward
wind, rewind, play, etc) from power up after you choose another one of
these functionst the spools completely fail turn! Though the spools do
sometimes turn on rare occasions apon power up, it's pretty weak. Most
operations usually just give up after a short time; play is there but
with bad picture and "wobbly" sound. I've had forward wind working
badly on a couple of occasions but it seemed to be very erratic and
the VCR gave up after only a short time. Rewind is pratically
nonexistant to not there at all.

I have tried oiling the capstan, and was tempted to remove the capstan
assembly and motor but I am not 100% sure if this is causing the
problem (it's had no effect). Also on the bottom of the VCR is a belt
which connects 2 wheels together, one larger (which I am *guessing* is
the capstan's wheel) and another which I have no idea what it does;
there is another arm or two and springs and cogs here but I do not
know what they do (these are on the underside of the VCR). I Can find
at least one FAQ about the "top" of the VCR (the mechanincs on the
same side where you put the tape in) but nothing at all about the
*underside* of a video!

I am concerned about going too far just in case I unscrew something
vital, and make a job more complicated.

Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong?

Thanks

Bad or seized capstan motor bearing? Power supply bad?

The "wobbly" sound leads me to think that a bearing has seized in the
capstan motor. (a common problem with Sanyo's) Even though you can turn the
motor by hand, if the bearing is bad enough, when power is applied to the
motor the capstan will tilt causing the flywheel to drag. Grab the top of
the capstan shaft & see if you can move it side-to-side. If so, the bearing
is shot. It uses 2 brass sleeve bearings in the motor. The top one is the
one that goes bad. You can buy bearings from MCM, but I think they have a
$25 minimum order. Take the motor to your local repair shop & let them
evaluate it.

I tried doing this but the capstan itself seems pretty solid. But
assuming it still is something to do with this how do I even remove
it; looking inside the VCR there's 3 screws surrounding it but then 3
smaller ones that are even closer; I'm not sure which ones to undo. I
need to be careful because so that I don't undo something that is
vital to the VCR and mess the whole thing up.

Now that I look over the vcr more I've now also noted that there are 2
audio level meters at the front of the video though these never seem
to light at all. I am not sure if they only work for some sort of
audio input or not but they don't seem to be doing anything. Maybe
this is all a power supply problem?

Thanks
