Sanyo VCR4300 Betamax

I'm working on this unit and it has good rewind, good fastforward, but when
you press play or record it starts
to play or record then stops in about 1 to 2 seconds. Dont understand why it
is stopping and not staying in
play. If you can help me fix this machine I will appreciate it, please email

I would guess the idler tire that turns the takeup reel for play mode is
worn out.

Check that the takeup reel is moving. If it doesn't move fast enough, a
loop develops and the machine senses the tape slack. And stops.

Not sure about this machine, but others I've seen have an idler driving
the tables, and the tire wears down over time. You could try some
rubber conditioner, or see if you can replace the tire.
