Sanyo 31" Fix

A friend, had a 31" Sanyo DS31590 which would not lock on to a channel. When
you switched channels it had a perfect picture until you took your finger
off the channel changer. He bought a new one from Walmart and gave me this
one. All I had to do after checking the R-106 and R-508 was to adjust the
T-151 to get it to lock on the channel. Is this a normal problem? Or did I
just get lucky?
Thanks, George

What made you check R106 and R508 ?
Tell us the rest of the story.
Maybe components have shifted out
of tolerence.!!!

For those of us who mat not be intimately familiar with that chassis, could you
explain how R106, R508 and T-151 pertain to tuning issues? Also, are you
referencing the remote control, or the channel up/down buttons on the set, or
both?

Ok, I'm sorry I neglected to mention the details. The previous owner said
that when he changed channels the picture was fine until you left it on a
channel. This was true with both the remote and the channel buttons on the
TV. The Repair World troubleshooting information says for Sanyo's with
tuning problems to check R-106 a 27k ohm that goes open. Well it was good,
R-508 is also listed as the other resistor that is a common problem in the
33V supply to the tuner. After it rested good, I found another tip that said
the T-151Video Detector transformer could be bad. It didn't test open or
have high resistance. I then looked in the troubleshooting tips and found a
tip about adjusting it and that was all I needed to do. I hope this helps.

Something drifted off value, and since it was not found, it may drift some
more. If this is true, eventually the defective part(s) will be too far off
tolerance, and proper maintenance will have to be done. Or, you may be
lucky, and there may not be any more problems for a long time.

Going by his description, this sounds like the AFC or AFT detector area.
This circuit area makes a DC correction voltage that is used to lock on to
the incoming station. It is doing a PLL type locking to the RF station
signal.

I do not have the service manual for this set, but it sounds familiar to me.

Sounds a lot like the problems Magnavox, Et Al, had in their sets a while
back. Real fix was to replace transformers and other components that had
changed in value. Hot fix was to just adjust the coils and tell the customer
it was time to look for another tele.

The resistors the OP mentions are in the 33 volt line, which I believe is
res\divided from a higher voltage from one of the fly's secondaries, then
zenered to 33 volts. If a resistor is open, there will be NO initial picture
present, as the tuner won't have the 33 to use for tuning. Symptoms of open
resistors are no picture\tuning.

The AFT transformers do go bad in these Sanyos, and I believe it's a chip
capacitor that's inside the can that goes bad. A proper fix is to replace the
can and re-align.
