Rotel reciever volume real soft

My trusty old stereo reciever has just started to be 'quiet' at 9 o'clock
volume setting. This used to be adequate for general listening, now it has
to be set at 12 or 1 oclock to just watch TV - 5 o'clock postion is real
loud but it wouldn't blow the speakers.

Model is Rotel RX-950 and is about 8 years old.

Any ideas what has happened. Quality of sound appears to be the same? No
crackling when changing volume.

**What happens when you push the muting switch?

**Has anything new been connected to the tape outputs, or the preamp
outputs?

Check if there is any short-circuit in the interconnects. For example,
if the + of the interconnect is short-circuited by, say, loose
wires/connection, with the - (in any of the channel), then the effect
will be a significant decrease in output voltage.

Nothing has change before this happened. I have been trying to figure out
what could cause it. I have removed speaker cables, readded. Removed all
interconnects and changed positions. Removed the amp/pream jumpers and
readded.

Though maybe volume knob slipped, but I can't see how it could have. nor can
I take it off (or easily) as it motorised with remote. Tried holding volume
knob in lowest setting, and using remote to increase volume but nothing
happens.

thanks for responses.

**I can only assume the following:

1) No fault exists in your amplifier.
2) A fault which I have never encountered before in that model exists in
your particular product.
3) We have both overlooked something very basic.

If it really concerns you, I suggest you have it serviced.

Maybe a bad spot on the volume control potentiometer(Cracked, warn
carbon coating) "I don't know the model so I don't know the schematic
or components used" but its just a possibility and suggestion to check
it.

**The chances of such a fault affecting both channels simultaneously would
be billions to one. There are a raft of faults which can affect a single
channel only in such a way. To affect both channels, however, narrows the
choices significantly. If it was a power supply fault, for instance, I would
expect increased levels of distortion.

Thanks for replies. I've changed patch cords and only put in STB at present.
Still have to watch at 1 oclock setting. Listed to the digital radio, and
sound is clear as you'd expect from Rotel (but that channel is horrible -
ABC)
