Rigol DS1054Z

Our very own David Jones is known for his hyperbole. However, based on
his near-hysterical claims (sorry Dave) about the new Rigol DS1054Z, I
made the decision to sell my DS1052E and buy one.

I could not be happier. It is a remarkable 'scope. Vastly superior to
the DS1052E in every way. It 'feels' more analogue (still not there yet,
guys) than the old model and the display is very crisp and detailed. The
four channels is a boon to me, as I normally run two 'scopes on my bench
(one analogue and one digital), so I can connect the two outputs of a
stereo amp to two channels and a probe or two to the other two channels.
I suspect my old analogue 'scope will see far less use in the future.

Nice one Rigol and Dave.

I have ordered a DS1054Z for 299Euro (free delivery in Europe + EU VAT 19%, 56Euro shipping to OZ
without VAT.)

**You should be happy with the 'scope. Except for the long boot time

the 1052E.

They are so popular that the next shipment (March) was already sold out
and I'll have to wait 'til April for delivery.
Have you tried the 100MHz upgrade and full options hack?

Can you reverse the flash upgrade if something goes wrong later?
I'm thinking of a warranty repair that is hardware-related, in that case
you might want to restore the original system.

What kind of warranty did you get with your scope?
Was it from Rigol direct or from the distributor?
If it's 12 months, I guess the prudent thing would be to wait, then
upgrade. But you might need to get the hack software that works with the
current Rigol software version now.

**I chose to buy from the Australian distributor (Emona) for a couple of
reasons:
1) The afore-mentioned warranty.
2) The price was fair, IMO.
3) It was available (No one had one for immediate delivery - Emona had
one or two left).

**Possibly. I'm not overly worried, as the 'scope performs quite well
right now. If I need more bandwidth I can drag out my old analogue Tek.

I don't need 100MHz most of the time either. However, the decoding options for IIC, SPI etc. that
come with the upgrade hack would be useful.
I would have bought from Emona too, if I were still in OZ. Being an expat changes your options.
My first CRO was a BWD539D - it cost about $700 back in the #70s. I learnt a hell of a lot about
electronics with that old workhorse - it was built like a brick shithouse and survived being dropped
about 1.5m to the floor, despite the CRO tube inside.
There are no Australian manufacturers left......that I know of...

My first CRO was a Philips PM3200, costing around $250. It was only 10MHz,
but I believed Bill Gates when he said 10MHz ought to be enough for anybody.
Actually that was in 1970, Bill was fifteen years old, and I had never heard
of him.

In any event 10MHz was enough for me back then, and for some time
thereafter. Perhaps it is time for me to upgrade? Yep, I still have the
PM3200, and it still works!

I sold the BWD539D when I left OZ for der Vaterland, it still worked,
but I thought it wasn't worth the shipping. I've now got two scopes, a
PM3335 and and PM3350. These are real CROs, and unusual, they work in
completely analogue mode or in digital. They don't make 'em like that
anymore, but the scope manufacturers seem to be trying to make digital
scopes look like the old analogue ones these days. Go figure.....
