RFID - tag detection, don't need ID

Maybe there is another way to do this.

I am looking to build something that will detect the presence of a small tag
(RFID?) when it passes within 5ft.

I don't need an ID, I just want to detect the presence of such.

Perhaps there is another way to do this which does not involve RFID.

What I am trying to do is detect the removal of something (say clothing
item) from a room that I can place a small/unoticeable tag or such inside.

Thanks for any help!

What's wrong with anti-theft tags?

This may sound funny/way over the top but I am trying to come up with a way
to catch a laundry room thief stealing from a shared launtry facility. I
figure if there was something small I could plant inside a clothing item and
hide a detector near the exit that would alert me. If it cost me $150 it
would be worth it LOL.
Hidden camera + motion detector to activate tape.

Thanks guys.... the camera+recorder is impractical due to cost and having to
hide it etc...

Andrey I am interested in that suggestion. Where would I start with this?

If you want to go low cost, there are a number of low-end cameras,
with a "spycam" mode, that can take a picture every 10s for a few days.
