RF Wireless transmitter/receiver

Hi,

I need to build a circuit for my alarm that will send a signal to one of
four boxes, connected wirelessly. Basically I need to have a box with four
inputs, and depending on which input is triggered, it will send a signal to
one of four receiver boxes so I can program a task to be performed.

The size of the transmitter is not too important, but the receiver boxes
must be as small as possible. Range only needs to be about 10 metres but
cannot be IR, must be RF to work through thin walls.

I have no problem sorting out the rest of the circuit so basically need a
little advice on what would be the smallest and cheapest way to have a
single transmitter box that can send signals on multiple channels separately
so only one receiver box will react to the signal depending on what is
transmitted.

I am based in the UK if that's important for component codes / recommended
suppliers.

Go to a model shop and look at radio control stuff for model planes

- I want wireless, not run off the earth cable in a powercircuit which is
still a wire! It needs to run off batteries not be plugged in.
- I don't want to BUY a prebuilt module, I want to build a circuit - hence
the posting in "electronics.design"
- X10 isn't anything like what I want to do, so not sure why you keep
pointing me at them unless you work for them!

Does anybody else have any ideas how I can build a very simple circuit with
a transmitter and receiver that works over wireless (using airwaves, no
physical connection to anything including a shared earth line). I do NOT
want a commercial solution, I want to build it, as this circuit will be
combined with other electronic circuitry that I am also incorporating in to
a larger design. I just need pointing towards an appropriate IC pair that
will send and receive an RF signal over the airwaves.

You could also look at "X-10", which is a wireless home control system

that sends signals out the power lines.

It really needs to be wireless RF and I'm still a bit stuck...

Imagine it more like this;

Transmitter : Big black box with 5 buttons (for ease of setting up)

Press button 1 on transmitter : Receiver 1 activates

Press button 2 on transmitter : Receiver 2 activates

Press button 3 on transmitter : Receiver 3 activates

Press button 4 on transmitter : Receiver 4 activates

Press button 5 on transmitter : Receiver 5 activates

So I need one transmitter that will send a signal which activates one of 5
physically separate boxes.

It has to be small and cheap, something like a remote for an aeroplane is
very expensive and way more than I need, I don't need analogue signals just
a plain "on or off" signal. Also there would only be one receiver, accepting
all channels. It only needs to receive a signal, so doesn't need to be two
way.

I need a transmitter that can send on different channels, then a receiver
that will receive on only one channel, and each receiver needs ideally to be
tiny (about the size of a keyring fob).

Help?
