RF synthesizer suggestions

Seeking suggestions for a computer-controllable (GPIB or other)
RF synthesizer that works to 500MHz or higher and that's not
too large (rules out old HP rack-mounts) and not too expensive
(used on eBay?). For example, the old Wavetek 3000 and 3001
aren't too big, have nice bat-handle thumbswitches, but they're
not easily computer controllable.

Marconi 2022 or an older model Marconi. I can't find my old Marconi
catalog for the 80's model Marconi number I'm looking for. I don't
believe HP ever did a small signal generator. Another avenue would be a
Comms test set.

You could build one of these (http://www.qsl.net/ke5fx/synth.html) and
run it from a PC printer port, but it doesn't do much right out of the
box. No lower-end coverage unless you mix it with a fixed source; no
output attenuator; no modulation capability. Noise performance is not
competitive with the better HP synthesizers (although it will clean an
8656A's clock, no pun intended).

What lower frequency limit, noise specs, and modulation options are you
hoping for?

Computer controllable by GPIB, etc?

Win,
Why not get one of the Analog Devices DDS evaluation boards and
put it in a box with power supply, etc.?

It was an option on this series of models.
