Resistance/heating wire wanted

Hi all,

I am trying to find heating wire, preferably in Melbourne. No luck so far
and even Google isn't helping. Tried L&H down the road and they couldn't
suggest anything.

You can see a picture of what I want (and am going to make) here --

or

Picture on right - note heating wire around flexible tube over the caption
"the heated CPAP tube with integrated heating element". These things sell
for $157.

Oatley has a new low-voltage heating kit (brewers please note), which I
have, and which will do the trick. However the heating cable supplied is
double-insulated sub-floor type. Even with the top layer of insulation
stripped off it is a somewhat too stiff. It's 0.7 ohms/metre and with the
9V brick supplied will radiate 15w.

Any ideas?

Nichrome wire any good?
Try jaycar, etc.

I suggest making it run off 12v for when you are on the backup system.

Nichrome wire used in heaters , used to be available from service shops
but now with public liability Im unsure..

** A 1600 watt electric jug element - the open wound coil type, has 36
ohms resistance and about 2 or 3 metres of wire when straightened.

Thanks all -- Jaycar has got nichrome wire but I think the resistance is too
high at 13.77 ohms/metre. The heating wire I've got is 5 ohms over 7 metres
to give 15 watts output @ 9v.

If my figuring of Ohm's Law is correct I would need 0.4 of a metre of
nichrome to give me 15 watts (at 9v) - and this is not enough turns to heat
the tube evenly I feel, although this night not be important.

The electric blanket idea I don't think will work and the resistance is
quite high - I make it about 280 ohms/metre. At 9v the length to give 15w is
very shirt.

You must be joking.

The missus asked me to look at doing that so she could hang onto the blanket for
a "car emergency" role. The b####y wire was stitched AND GLUED in place.
Would have taken a couple of days to get near removing it, so it stayed in
there.

... brewers please note
Bernard, if you're brewing, why not just build a support for your vat
and screw a batten for a 25W globe inside it. Bog-simple to build,
just four bits of wood with the east-west pair 3 inches higher than
the north-south pair (gets you airflow). Pull an old jumper over the
vat and Bob's your mother's brother.

No need to put anything inside the brew that needs cleaning and could
cause electrolysis, electrocution, etc :).

You should be able to find "Helios Electroheat" in Melbourne, they
should be able to help. (I couldn't open the page to see what you are
trying to do, but they will have resistance wire.)

Or an old water heater. modify the thermostat and you get 400 litres
of fun . (you'll probably need to cut the top off so you can fit all
your ingredients in though. If you are gonna distill your stuff, you
might end up using a water heater anyway :) Water heaters from the
junk yarrd are great tanks.
