Req: Diamontron monitor repair

Guest
Hi,

I have a Compaq P710 17" Flat screen DiamondTron monitor which just "stopped
working" the other morning. It's not doing anything when powered up so I
assume the main fuse on the board has gone (I've tested the kettle lead
which is fine). We have dodgy power here so it's probably taken a surge and
blown.

Is it easy to replace these relatively safely as the fuse is actually on the
main board of the monitor (under all the shielding)?

I've got a fair amount of electronics experience (did electronics degre at
uni) but have always been very very wary of the high voltages floating
around in the caps in monitors. I've read the HV basics (i.e. hand in
pocket, rings etc off).

Also, has anyone got the schematic for the chassis thats in this unit (as
it's not marked anywhere)?

Cheers all,

- Chris.

Compaq, or their monitor manufacture will not sell service manuals, or parts
to outside of their authorized service reps. You would have to trace it
through and troubleshoot it yourself. If it is a standard type generic part
that has to be replaced, you will be able to find the part and fix the
monitor yourself. If it is a dedicated factory part, this is where you will
be stuck.

The fault is most likely in the high voltage section, scan amp sections, and
in the power supply. It is common that the damage can be in more than one
area.

These monitors are a big challenge to service yourself, without the proper
experience, availability of parts, and proper tools. You would probably be
best off (safer also) to send it to their authorized service rep for an
estimate. This way you can determine if it is worth to service or not.

If you are going to replace the monitor, take a serious look at the LCD
displays. They have a lot to offer in the way of performance as a PC
monitor, compared to a CRT monitor.
