Replacing a cap in a Powersupply

Hi!

I have a small power supply.
Input - 220v
Output 5v/3A.
The filter cap needs to be replaced.
It is 400v/33uF
I cannot find this cap around here.
Can I put smaller or larger capactiance cap instead?

Thanks ahead,
Gabi

In most cases you should be able to use any cap that is equal or higher in
the voltage rating. As for the cap value, depending on the design you can
exceed the microfarad value. If it is a simple filter cap, the tolerance
for the microfarad value can be wide. If a larger cap, such as a 47 uF will
physical fit, this should work in most cases.

If the cap is in a critical circuit that is for example, forming a time
value, or in a feedback circuit of some type, the value will usually be
critical. As for the value you are asking about, this is fairly common in
both 400 Volts, and 450 Volts. The value of 33 uF is extremely common.

You shouldn't have a hard time finding that capacitor.. it's still very
available. www.mouser.com stocks that value in both axial and radial
styles, from several manufacturers. I haven't looked, but www.digikey,
www.alliedelec.com, and others probably stock them too.. You just have to
use the net and let your mouse do the walking.

Tweeldee, thanks for reply.

It's easy to say that it is available on the net, when you are in the us.

I'm not.
I is a bit hard to buy a 20cent cap, and pay 40USD for shipping.

I couldn't find it in my country, so I'm asking if I can replace with other
values.

Again, thanks,
Gabi
