Can anyone suggest suitable replacements for this part?
The local reference books do not contain this nr and the internet
made me not much wiser either.

Bart,

I've got a 1982 data book that lists the BZW 06/171. Unfortunately the
text is in German, so I'm doing a bit of guessing here, but I'll just
give you what they've got, even if I don't understand it myself.

U(R) = 171V

P(BR) = 600 (1ms)

U(BR) 190 - 210V

I(R) = 1mA

t(rr) 246V/2.4A

I(R) 5uA

U(R) 171V

So, what I think you've got there is a 171 volt zener diode rated at
600mW. I hope this helps you out.

P.S. The source is the ddv1 diode book, 1982-1983 edition from ECA.

its a stand off 171 volt surge clamping unidirectional device.
its good for 600W..etv...
if it has a B suffex then its bidirectional.
you may want to replace it with a bidirection..\
it clamps at 270 or so ..
its more like a zener diode but has the clamping ability
much like a crow bar SCR circuit would have.
