Hi. I installed a replacement CD laser mechanism (original
Phillips part for CDM1.2) into a Marantz CD17. It now works but has trouble
with some CD's that work on other players.
I read that the parts are just straight swaps & come preadjusted (the is one only one
adjustment trimpot on the replacement & none on the CD player.
Any ideas??

Are we talking philips CDM 12 industrial/pro player here ?.

http://www.daisy-laser.com/cdpro2.htm (these pics are of a CD pro - 2
that supposedly overcomes the problem you are having - but it looks
much the same as the CDM 12 )

Quite a bit of info on this site actually.

Some models of the CDM 12 / pro will refuse to read certain CD's.
"Worlds best ever beer songs vol 2" 2 CD set is a classic example of
this and there are others as well. Most CDRs wont work either.

It seems to be a normal condition with many of these players.

There are no adjustments on this player that I'm aware of (if its a
CDM 12.) but this may have changed ?
