Repairing Heathkit IM-1528 and IM-1538 w/o schematics

Greetings. Does anyone on this newsgroup happen to have manuals handy
for either of these meters, or happen to be familiar enough with them
to answer a few questions?

While checking out a Heathkit IM-1528 VTVM and an IM-1538 AC
voltmeter, neither of which I have the Heathkit manuals for, I
observed a few things that don't appear to be quite right with these
meters. I'd like like to get them working again and begin using them
on my bench.

When looking inside of the IM-1528, at first I thought that my eyes
were playing tricks on me. There's a size C battery sitting in what
looks like a capacitor clamp, with wires soldered to either end of the
bettery. This doesn't seem quite right, so I didn't attempt to plug
it in and try it, not even with a variac. Is there supposed to be a
battery soldered into that circuit?

As to the IM-1538, other than one disconnected wire inside the chasis,
which is connected only to the "dB out" jack, IIRC, everything looked
ok. When I plugged it in, things appeared ok when the "volts" switch
was depressed, other than the meter not being zeroed on most of the
scales. When the "dB" switch was depressed, the meter
"reverse-pegged," no matter which scale was selected. What I mean is
that it went off of to the left-most end of the scale, as far as
physically possible, where there were no markings. Is this indicative
of something more than a need for more than a few adjustments?

Hi,
If anyone's interested
there used to be many Heathkit circuits at
http://www.circuitarchive.co.uk/heath.htm
but this site was closed down because it wasn't accessed for thirty days
but by typing the address into http://www.archive.org/
many of the circuits can still be accessed.
Unfortunately I didn't see circuits of those meters.

There's some Heathkit stuff at http://www.heathkit-museum.com/hktest.shtml
and http://www.heathkits.com/doc.html .
Once you find a site ( e.g. using Google ) links take you to hundreds of
others.

Shame about http://www.manualman.com/catalog/heathkit.htm .
They had a lot of Heathkit manuals
but have now apparently closed down.
I wonder if those numbers are correct.
I haven't seen them listed anywhere!

Hello,

Heathkit did use a C cell for the ohm meter circuit of many of Their
VTVM's. I don't know the IM-1528, might you mean the IM-5228?
