Repair to printed cable on Citizen IPD3530 receipt printer

Hi all,

I am working on a Citizen IDP 3530 dot matrix receipt printer (as a favour)
that has the following problem:

The printer appears to be missing 1 line of dots (could be more) thorough
the text, so the text appears as though it has a white line through it. I
took out the print head and soaked it in alcohol, but it still had the same
fault.

I then noticed that the flat (brown) printed cable as been damaged. The
damage extends though 3 of the tracks. I'm now under the assumption that
this is a causing the absence of certain pins firing on the print head.

My question is, can anyone give me pointers on how to best repair this
cable. I considered replacing it, but It appears to be part of the print
head assembly which is prohibitively expensive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've still got a few salvaged HP data cables, you might be able to
substitute one (suitably cut down) to fit the printer. Or you could
perhaps use one from a dead CD-ROM drive.

Email me on the usual address, mandoline () cwgsy () net

You may be able to scrape away some of the plastic coating, and try to
do a very light precise soldering. Sometimes the complete ribbon
melts with any kind of heat from a soldering device. Since this is a
business machine, I am sure that the repair can be written off as an
expense anyways. You may as well use new parts, and make it reliable.

I myself have replaced these assemblies when defective, rather than
try to fix them.

I have had a similar problem on a Epson 1080LQ which I bought for $20
on fleemarket. Except, the cause was the broken needle (pin) in the
printer head. Believe it or not, I had the thing dismantled, patched
and working properly in two days. Very fiddly job, especially when you
find a good head in the printer someone dumped in the bin about two
months later...
As far as the ribbon goes, I would suggest the same: repair using the
auto rear demister repair paint. Soldering wont work on it even if you
dont melt it, as the solder needs something to hold on to. Drawing a
wire of molten solder on a piece of plastic? Sounds like trouble.
And have a good look, those ribbons cant be part of the head, they are
plugged in very fine edge connectors. There should be a piece of
stiffer plastic at the end to enable it to go into the contacts.
