Remote control via phone

A friend has bought a fixer-upper vacation place & wants to have the
ability to turn on the heater via phone so that it's warm when he
arrives. I said fine, that there are devices on the market for
$200 to $300 that will do that. "Ou of money!" he says...is there
a cheap way?

So I got to thinking, "they have phone line and answering machine
there, what can I do with that?"

I was thinking running a 8ohm to ??? XFMR and that to a reed relay,
trigger a holding relay to complete the house thermostat circuit.

Dial-up, then hold down on one of the touch tone keys (perhaps a
signaling circuit to provide proof of activation).

Do they still make reed relays? I was thinking of one that responded
to 1/2 half of a particluar DTMF tone.

I would appreciate suggestions/links from those who have done this
before, with a focus on cheap/simple/bulletproof (I know, I know,
I only get to pick two of those three).

TIA,

Stan.

You have two choices:
a) build you own cirquit (u can use a M8870 ic for decoder and maybe a
microcontroller afterards)
b) buy a kit ready to use:

The terrorists in Spain are believed to have done something like that.

I don't know whether "bulletproof" would be an appropriate adjective,
though.

Well, I'm talking definitely about a land-line, so the terrorist
think comparison doesn't work here.
