Remote Control Sensor?

I have a Kenwood VR-309 audio video receiver. When I first turn it on, the
remote control will work, and this is only sometimes. Once the unit has been
on a couple of minutes, the remote control stops working. I have tried both
the remote control that came with the unit, as well as 2 universal remote
controls. None of these units will work with the A/V receiver. Does this
sound like a bad remote control sensor? If so, is this a hard thing to repair
myself. I have no experience with soldering. Or, if I have it done at a shop,
does anyone have any idea of a ball park price for repair? Thanks much.

The most likely suspect is the remote. Very rarely do IR receivers go bad.
Install fresh batteries, clean the battery contacts inside the remote. If
this doesn't do the trick, take the remote to a repair shop & have it tested
to see if it's putting out a signal.

Hi thanks for your reply.
The only thing is I've used 3 different remote controls (that previously worked
with the unit) and none of them work with it now and I tried new batteries in
all of them.
 
Sounds like you probably have a bad solder joint in the Kenwood for the remote.
Do the functions on the front panel of the receiver work even when the remote
is not operating it? If so, I would suspect a solder joint on the IR receiver
for the remote and not a processor issue or similar. If it is just a bad
solder joint, it should be a rather inexpensive repair, assuming the whole
receiver doesn't have to be disassembled to get to the solder joints. As for a
dollar estimate, I can't help you there.

Thank you very much for your reply, Rod. Yes, the front panel on the receiver
works fine, so I think you're right in your assessment. I guess it's time to
take it in for service. I found a place that told me they will give me a free
estimate for repair.
 
I have done a lot of Kenwood warranty, & I'm
sure there are a couple of cold solder joints at
the infa-red receiver! Look behind the remote
receiver sensor! Look into the display, & you will
see where it is! This WILL fix it! Good luck, Rono.
