Recording audio from the soundcard to a VCR ... why doesn't

Hi !

I have a nvidea fx5200 graphic card with TVout (composite video) and I
trying to record some PC videos to a VCR.

By now I succeded in recording it's video output to the VCR via SCART
conector :

As we can see on http://www.hardwarebook.net/connector/av/scart.html

the 20 and 17 pins on the SCART are what we need to record the
composite video from the graphics card.

Now it tried to record the audio ... What I did was to wire the 'Audio
In Left + Mono' SCART pin 6 to the left audio signal from my soundcard
(SB 128) and wire also the 'Audio Ground' SCART pin 4 to the
correspondent audio ground on the soundcard (I didn't bother to wire
the right audio channel to the SCART for now ...)

Strangely (or not) no audio was recorded on the VCR (the video was OK)
.... But I managed to sucessfull record audio from another audio source
(line-out from a CD walkman )

Why I can't record audio from the soundcard and have no problems on
recording from the walkman CD player ?

I'm looking to the impedance field on the table for pin 6 (look for
the link above) '>10k ohm' . Should I include any resistor between
the soundcard and the SCART pin 6 ?

I think i'll try this now ...

Do you have a way to verify that the audio is really leaving the VCR via
your connections?

I would check the above before panicking on this...

I think you might be making this too hard.....

Let me tell you one thing, I don't know anything specific about that
particular graphics card.

When I record to VCR from my computer:

My graphics card has s-video out, so I have a signal converter to convert it
to composite signal, then I plug this to the video input on the VCR.

Then I run a cable from my soundcard's line out/headphone out/whatever out
there is for stereo audio, which splits into two RCA connectors, which I
plug into the audio line-in's in the VCR.

So with your hardware, wherever you have a video signal out, convert it (if
needed) and run a cable to your VCR's video in (whatever sort it may be, I
think most likely a composite video connecter). Then run audio cable from
your sound card to the audio in's on your VCR.

Now. If I seem to be blindly missing a point here, please let me know, I
don't like to give crappy advice, especially if it's because I misunderstood
the problem :)

Thanks all the replies but I already found the problem ...
As I suspected when I included a resistor between
the soundcard and the SCART input audio (pin 6) the sound was recorded
perfectly.

(OK, next time I'll try all the possibles solutions before posting 8))

I guess it was a requirement of impedances has I saw on the URL.
l I'm using a 33K resistor but I'll try something closer to the
recommended 10K.

I wonder what will be the effect on the recorded sound quality ...

My problem is that my VCR is old and doesn't have a audio in connector
8)
The only audio input is hidden on the SCART connector, so that was I
trying to do : feed audio from the soundcard to the SCART audio in.

Has I said, it seems that there must be some impedance (does the VCR
detects there is a audio signal this way? I don't fully understand the
need for the impedance... current limiting ??!!)

It's a Europe thing, because of our "close" asssociation with the French
they allowed us to use the most crosstalk ridden device ever invented to
transfer video, audio, noise, the kettle switching off, the heating
switching on and a million other unwanted things between the video and the
TV. Just to make it more useful the standard never really got implemented
byt eh manufacturers with any uniformity and you end up having to open the
leads up and solder extra wires on while cutting others so you can watch
other things when the DVD or video is not in standby. You americans have it
so easy with RCA plugs.

It's a Panasonic NV-SD220, maybe out of production now 8)

Because your vcr is probably set to blank out without video present.
It is probably not user setable. Some are tho.

Put an old camera into the vid jack and record the camera cap.
Or a lighted scene might be required.

Actually, I like the French... It's their Govt. that sucks. We
should not chastise the French peoples for what their rulers do or
