Hello,

I have an RCA VR634hf 4-Head Hi-Fi VCR, only a few years old, and it's
been behaving odd for quite a few weeks now.

When I put a cassette in to play, it'll play for about 7-10 seconds,
then it shuts off with the 'tape not inserted' symbol blinking. When
you turn it back on it simply ejects the tape. This also happens with
timer recording.

I'm hoping it's something I can fix with a little bit of instruction.
Any insights would be much appreciated.

Thanks very much.

I'm not familiar with your specific model number, but based on the symptoms,
I'd guess that it has a dirty/defective mode switch or a slipping rubber
drive belt.

If it's the model I'm thinking of, the take-up soft brake goes bad, the tape
starts spooling out, machine stops. Often happens more when the commercial
advance feature is used, since there's a lot more shuttling the tape around.

Thanks for the suggestions. Any hints on how/where I'd be able to
locate those parts (ie. belt, mode switch) if I wanted to open the VCR
and do some investigation?

Mark, the tape doesn't actually spool out, the tape itself just gets
ejected intact. Very strange.

Here's a link to the VCR specs:

Thanks again.

I think if you were watching the failure occur inside the machine, the tape
would start to spool out, then would retract when the machine stops or
ejects.
