RCA TV left & right sides have black area

Our RCA TV (a little over 10 years old) has this problem:

Both the left side and the right side of the screen are black. We
still can see the entire picture like we are supposed to, but things
look a little long, people look a little stretched out.

It's a 32" inch screen and the area on each side is about 4".

There's a place in town that does free estimates, but I thought I'd
look around the internet and see what I could find out about this
problem before we drag this big thing around town. Will it be
expensive? Should we look for a new TV vs cost of repair?

Actually our bedroom TV is goofy too, I'll post seperately about that
(Magnavox TV colors went crazy).

Thanks.

Did it happen gradually? Does it change as the set warms up? You're not
getting full horizontal deflection, the place to start is to check the
outputs of the power supply, and then capacitors in the horizontal area. If
the picture was good before the problem occurred just take it down and have
it repaired, even if it isn't much more to buy a new set, the new set you
can buy for the price will be lower quality than what you have.

Does the visible frame sort of assume an hourglass shape?

If so, I'd look at the pincushion circuit or any part on the mainboard that
supplies power to it.

A friend of mine has an RCA 32 inch set that did this at one time. Turned out
to be a cold solder joint on a diode that was linked to the pincushion.
Reflowed the joint and proper operation was restored. - Reinhart
