I've always ignored TVs. Most of my work has been with two-way
radios, auido amps, ham radio etc., therefore I'm not very
knowledgeable with television.

I have a 54' RCA projection set. Model # P52920BLYX1.

My first question is where do I get schematics? I've checked Sam's
but they don't show an exact match on the model number and I hate to
spend $40 to find out I made a mistake & I need to spend another $40.

Problem(s).
Day 1: Set is five years old showing no problems whatsoever.
Day 2: No sound so I used an external amplifier off the audio output.
There is big charred spot (1"diameter) on the middle of main circuit
board.
Day 3: No tuner but video & S-video works, so I use a VCR to tune it.
The bottom corners are showning blue and there is a sublte ghost under
the dominant images such as lettering.
Day 14: Picture is only shows 1/3 of the image on the left cluttered
with jail bars.

Where should I start?

Judging from the looks of the charred area on main board, a new one
will be in the fix. Is it worth it?

TIA

You should start by identifying the charred part, also is it truly charred
or is the PCB just darkened? Some darkening is normal around components that
run hot, lots of times people think this is the fault. Next you need to poke
around and check the obvious things, solder joints, particularly around the
tuner ground shield and in the power supply, and anywhere else they appear
dull or cracked. Since you continued using the set after noticing a fault
you've done quite a bit more damage than if you'd had it looked at when it
first started acting up.

Sounds like a coolant leak. If so, the CRTs need to be pulled, and the gaskets
and bladder changed. The board needs to be removed, soaked with an amonia
based cleaner to remove all traces of coolant, and the board needs to be
properly and safely repaired. This is lots of work for a technician.
