This television has excessive brightness. I have checked tuner
grounds, resistors on CRT and near flyback. No unusually high ESR
caps. B+ is normal. Flyback adjustment does little. This problem is
not in the database I use.

Has anyone dealt with this before? As usual any advice is welcomed,
and thanks to all who are willing to help! - Tim

This problem is well documented, bad connections on tuner and/or EPROM.

ctc177 series bright screen. in order
1. Tuner grounds failure causing eeprom corruption.
2. Low Video output b+ supply due to failing 200 v scan derived supply
capacitor.
3. Cracked ground connection to flyback focus/G2 divider.

That chassis is so very well documented with all the failures from the tuner
grounds it is well worth your time to look it up, start at
www.repairfaq.org.

Check for shorted video buffer transistor. Between tuner and flyback near
rear of PCB (Q1903??)

I found an open transistor on the CRT board which took care of the
brightness. Now there is excessive blurriness. Everything is smeared
over to the right about 8 inches. I will check out the choke tomorrow
when I go back to work. Thanks all - Tim
