Picture is fine, but nothing comes out of the speakers,
regardless of which input is used.
They pop when the unit is shut down, however.
Where should I look in there?

thanks

Check the on screen menu and be certain that the "Speakers" are turned
ON.... and that you do not have the tuner in SAP mode..... still no sound
then probably a bad/corrupted EPROM.

This will be only the second time I've replace an EPROM, and it's been a
long time.
Are they hard to come by or difficult to replace, generally?
I'm good at soldering, but not too sure what other things to know before I
get into this.
Any info would be appreciated, or alternative testing methods if any.

this is from another repair group:

TELEVISION
RCA
CTC187
NO AUDIO
CHECK SERVICE MENU SETTING P25. IF #15 REDUCE SETTING TO 13. (BAD
EEPROM)

TELEVISION
RCA
CTC187
LOW AUDIO
EEPROM BAD. LIFTING PIN 3 OF U1901 RESTORES. DON'T CUT TRACE.

When you replace it - socket it, and make sure to write down the
values of the old eeprom - even if you use a pre-programmed one! best
of luck - Tim

Thank you both for the information.
I've been through the configuration and inspected the insides.
Nothing looks bad, but when you use the menu option to turn the speakers on
and off,
the speakers pop.
Should I assume this may be an issue with amplification to the speakers,
or is that handled by the EEPROM?

Jer:
Most probably a corrupted EPROM.....
had the television ever had previous service? ....
or the OBT ground re-work done in the past?
Have you had other intermittent symptoms
with the set like snowy picture, slightly
squashed vertical, power on/off problems??
