RCA 50" widescreen power problem

I recently purchased a RCA 50" widescreen HDTV. Model HDLP50W151YX1.
After owning this set for 2 weeks, during the middle of the night, the
set powered on by itself 3 times. I called RCA and they told me to
call an authorized service center. The service center had my set for
3 weeks and told me that my set is 'normal'. If I simulate a power
failure, my set will turn on when I plug the cord back into the
socket. This is not normal. I have gone to 2 different TV/Video
stores and ran the same test on the same model TV. They both did not
turn on. They stayed off like they should. The store where I
purchased this TV has refused to exchange my set for a new one. Has
anyone else had a problem like this?

Normally a set should not have to be unplugged from the AC to restart.
There is something wrong with the set (most likely), or there is something
in the environment of the set that is causing this.

I am surprised that the store is refusing to exchange the set. Did you ask
them if they would exchange the set if you would pay a re-stocking charge?
Some places for 15% of the value of the set will take it back.

Whenever buying a major item, check about their return policy. If you agree,
always get it in writing, and signed by the manager of the dealer, or
someone that is responsible for what they sign.

If you get the set changed, look at a better brand of set. In a TV set of
any kind, I would seriously look at the Sony, Panasonic, Hitachi, and JVC
products before anything else.

My problem has been solved. A tech from the TV/video store called and
we went through 4 on screen menus to get to one that said: when power
is restored, turn tv set 'on'. I just had to turn that switch to
'off'. I wonder why no one at RCA knew this!

IMHO!! Thompson has a very firm way of denying any problems with their
products, until there is enough evidence to prove them wrong. This also
includes having real knowledge about all the features of the products
marketed under their names of RCA and GE. Want to know about features of one
of their sets, go ask a salesman that has actually taken time to tinker with
them and figure out what menus are actually implemented in each particular
model and what each menu selection does.
BTW do not ask Thompson Technical Services about the implementation of
Chipper Checker!! They just tell you to read the manual!! Experienced this
when asking about interfacing to an Senium model having the nice net
connector. Cheers, have a great Holiday Season.
