RC Circuit Help

[nearly blind]

Can someone tell me what this does?
It's connected to a rectified audio signal (via a diode)
and the control input of an adjustable gain amp (for AGC)
How do you compute the
"attack" and "release" times for this circuit?
I have an EE degree but that was years ago ...

You'd have to know the source impedance.
Otherwise, you're asking for the R/C time constant of X.
