Rabbit ears switch...

I can\'t believe I\'m asking this after all these years but what exactly is the rotary switch on a rabbit ears antenna? Maybe some sort of tapped inductor/balun or something? Generally these are unmarked, my RCA has 13 dots in a clockwise pattern. I\'ve never known where to set the damn thing and as a whole it seems it\'s pretty much useless. ? -- thanks

I believe the knob is used when the antenna has more than two elements. They combine the signals from the multiple elements in varying ways, that effectively steers the antenna.

Rabbit ears don\'t work well in general, so steered rabbit ears won\'t work a lot better.
