former regular poster here ( plus PITA) and now U-tube superstar \"David L. Jones\" is a barrel of laughs.

6 minutes into this RECENT vid, he discovers a R-core transformer in a tear down. Having no clue what it is he goes ape.

Hadn\'t come across the gapless rectangular core genre, but ISTM it\'s
just an easier-to-wind version of a toroid, with the two windings
separated, and therefore has the toroid\'s well-known advantages. No?

My long comment is down the list.

Toriods are very quick to wind, but need expensive machines.

RE-cores are wound using simple machines and familiar insulation methods.

**R-cores have a few advantages and a dew disadvantages. They\'re larger
and less efficient than toroids, but offer vastly superior isolation
from mains interference. You\'ll often find them in high end, low level
applications. The last one I saw was in a VERY expensive Sony CD DVD/CD
player.
