Quick advice on tv

A mate recently acquired (was given by his mother) a Sony KV-XF25M30
Triniton TV. He says that the remote will turn the sound on, and change
channels, but there is no picture at all on the tube - from what I can
gather, no white dot, no sign of a raster, nothing.

We both know it'll need taking to a repair shop, I was just wondering, given
these very poor set of clues, whether anyone might posit a guess as to what
the problem may be, and how much it might cost to fix; I realise even with
my knowledge it could be a million different things, but was hoping that in
such a situation some things would occur more commonly than others.

Thanks for any advice.

Robert

If that happened to us here in Brisbane, we would get another one for $20.
There is always council cleanups going on and some people rightly or wrongly
collect the old tv sets and resell them. Half of them work. Ask yourself, is
it a good size and a good model. Is it really worth repairing.

Presumably there's no EHT?

Easy check is to hold the back of your hand near the screen and see if
the hairs rise (assuming you've got some). :) Try it on a working
set if you want to know what should happen.

If there's no one home you've now got it down to considerably less
than a million things, mostly associated with the horizontal sweep.

Hi,

Generally, if you have sound but no picture, problem is not that difficult
to fix.
When you say "change channels", does it mean that channel number is being
displayed?
If so, problem is somewhere in IF stages and SONY is being known for having
bad solder there.

Another thought -- try using remote and increase brightness/contrast. I have
seen few SONY TVs that would lose memory.

As for repair -- where are you?

Rudolf
