question about google searches

In the past few days, every time I do a google search, I get the usual page
of sites and pages that I am used to getting , but then another screen will
pop up over the google one and has the title 'Searching the Search Engines'.
Then it shows more results for whatever I am searching for but most of the
results are commercial, ie they're selling something.

I am really getting sick of this shit and I wish there was a way to get rid
of these popups. I have popup killer but it only kills the current popup.
All the popup screens have different titles (based on the search subject) so
I have to use popup killer every time I do a search now. Does anyone know
how to stop these annoying popups permanently?

There are two programs you should try. The first is called Ad-aware from
Lavasoft (sorry no url, use google :)

This is a free program that will scan your hard drive and remove (with your
confirmation) malicious spyware and adware that is running or installed.
That's what's causing your popups.

If that doesn't fix the problem, get another program called spybot search
and destroy (google again). This one will give you a warning about
compatibility issues with ad-aware you can ignore. This is also a free
spyware remover.

Neither of these programs will ever ask you to register and neither contains
spyware of their own. I've been using both, in combination with a popup
blocker and eliminated a lot of problems I was having.

Download Ad-Aware and /or Spybot.
Install and run (often).

Joe, what has happened is that something is installed on your machine-
some "spy" utility- that is intercepting your search requests and then doing
its own search. The suggestion of getting SpyBot is a great one. Locate
and remove that piece of software and Google will not be interrupted again.
It isn't Google doing this- it is a "utility" that you have gotten
(probably inadvertantly) installed on your machine while browsing.

I went to enigmasoft and downloaded a program called spyhunter, a 'free'
program. I ran the scan and it found about 200 things in the registry, all
marked 'severe', and some files and some stuff in memory. So I clicked on
the 'remove' button, and it says that it cannot remove them until I buy the
full version of the software. So what's free?

Hi Jacob,

Sorry, Ive just been so pissed off about this whole mess. Yes, I did , I
read all the posts and once I cooled off enough I located spybot search and
destroy. I had installed adaware a few months ago, but really couldn't
understand how to use it. spybot snd is really cool. It is easy to use, and
it found a lot of stuff. I removed most of the stuff I knew didn't belong
and the problems have gone away for now. I was wondering tho. It found a lot
of back web stuff, but said that some of it comes installed on hp and compaq
systems. I have an hp system, so I didn't know if I should destroy all of
those. Any hints at which ones may cause trouble? Some were listed in the
regular hp directory, but some were listed as HKEY Local machine, HKEY
local classes, etc. I don't know what that means. Then DSO exploit from
microsoft, regarding security holes with IE. I am not sure whether to get
rid of those either. Any advice is appreciated. I don't want to get carried
away with this and destroy everything. Also, My apologies to the rest of
the group for the off topic posts.

I found spybot on downloads.com and installed it and ran it. It found some
stuff that when I removed it, the problems seem to be solved for now. What
was really irritating was that my homepage got changed. That's fixed now
too. Thanks to all who replied.

Are you running a firewall? If not, try the free version of Zone
Alarm.

We now return you to our normally scheduled programming.

Joe,
It sounds like you could also use a better popup blocker
--or better yet--a better browser.
Mozilla is HIGHLY configurable and is eons ahead of IE.
It natively contains much of what folks have to download
to patch IE's shortcomings.
The state of plug-ins is very advanced as well.
In short: Highly recommended.
