There's usually a fine adjustment control, otherwise for larger variation
you'll need to change the crystal.

Maybe if you go fast enough *away* from it, by the time you get back the
clock is more advanced than you.

Hmm. I thought I may have put it badly, but maybe I didn't! :)

Ken
(PS. I actually meant that yiou would have slowed relative to the clock,
hence it was 'advanced'. )

You know, my alarm clock has been getting pretty damn cocky lately, almost
acting like it's smarter than I am. Every morning, I get in my car and
drive away from it, and it probably sits there gloating. Sure, all it ever
says is something like 8:43, but I'll bet it's gloating inside, thinking,
"That's 1362 times he's gone away quickly. I'm far more advanced than him
now..."

In a couple years, I'll bet the alarm clocks are going to take over.

The standard way to "speed up" (more accurately, *increase the
frequency*) of a QUARTZ (not a number of quart containers) crystal, is
to remove the rock from the (old military) holder and do some careful
grinding; i think toothpowder was used.
The other radio amateur trick, to lower the frequency, was to use a
soft lead pencil and "scribble" on one or both sides.
Simply changing the capacitive load can make up to a 0.1 percent
frequency difference.

The grinding and pencil tricks were to go WAY off frequency.

On the other hand, since pints are smaller, and have less mass, they should
be faster by a factor of about 2, being driven with the same amount of
power. Of course, you would have to compensate for the wind resistance on
the hands (especially the seconds hand), since they would be traveling
faster.

the fluid may apply to the energy storage system as well as the
escapement.

There's usually a fine adjustment control, otherwise for larger variation
you'll need to change the crystal.
You can use sandpaper. If you make the crystal smaller, it will
oscillate faster. But most crystals are sealed in a little case and
you can't get to one without destroying the case and probably the bare
crystal too. I've seen older crystals that were used extensively in
ham radio (decades ago the Novice class license only allowed CW (code)
transmissions, and the transmitter had to be crystal-based) and surely
military applications as well, in standard cases held together with
screws so you could take the thing apart and replace the actual
crystal in it. But those things were the size of a fat wristwatch.
