q about battery life

With regard to my walkman -- does changing the volume effect battery
life? That is, if I turn "up" the volume, will this shorten the life of the
batteries?

This Q has been bugging me for years.

Thanks to all.

yes.

but wait for some *real* genius to come along and explain that it won't
make all that much difference - i think most of the power would go to
spinning the CD.

if you get experimental, be careful of your ears!

The audio power output amp is Class A and it draws more current as you turn
up the volume.

Inasmuch as when you increase the volume you increase the power input to the audio
amplifier stage, which demands more current from the power supply, the answer has to be
YES.

As an insufferable pedant, I can't let this one pass. If it were a class
A amp, the current would be constant. Which would be kind of a silly
way to design battery stuff. They're practically all class AB, except
for the high-end class Ds and Es. ;-)

From personal experience: I got a 5" B&W TV at a pawn shop for $25. It
takes 10 - count'em, ten - C cells. Which cost almost as much as the TV,
and last about 3 hours. If you're a TV watcher, it's cheaper to get a
hotel room. Anyway, toward the end of the battery life, I can see the
raster shrink on audio peaks, almost like an upside-down VU meter. :)

Cheers!
Rich
