PSone LCD problems

This may not be the optimal place to post this but I'll give it a shot.
I've got a cheap DVD player, and an equally cheap Playstation one LCD, one
of the ones that flips up. I can't connect the two directly, using my
hacked on Composite input (I'm too cheap to buy the av cable, but I was able
to figure out the pinout) but if I plug the DVD player into my VCR, and then
the LCD into the VCR it works. I only have access to a voltmeter, no scope
so I can't check signal levels. Does it sound like I'm on the right track as
far as beleiving that I've got a signal level problem? If so, what can I do
in the way of building a signal amp capable of high enough bandwidth for a
composite video signal? Anyone have any other intuitions. The VCR is
really cheap so I doubt its doing any level conversion...

Thanks,
Alex
