PS/2 to USB dongle

Is there a schematic I can refer to to build the PS/2 to USB dongle?

I need to use a PS/2 to USB dongle that comes with a standard mouse on
a legacy specialty mouse device for the disabled. I don't want to
have to buy the whole mouse just for the dongle and I need quite a few
of them. Furthermore these mouse plus dongle offerings are quite hard
to find these days and will disappear eventually as everything goes to
USB.

Purchased dongles won't work, as they are just wires and the mouse does
both USB and PS/2.

Your best bet may be some laptop accessory: USB docking station o similar.

Klm, what you want is an USB to PS2 adaptor like this

That's backwards from what he wants to do. That lets you attach a USB mouse
to a PS/2 port.

In addition, that IS a dongle. It will only work with a USB mouse that is
already set up to detect such a dongle and switch to PS/2 operating mode.
Just look at it: the dongle would have to emulate an entire USB host in
order to talk to the mouse.

It's about as cheap as you will get, unless you are willing to dig through
TI's USB chips and possibly find the correct chip, and build boards in large
quantities.

Thanks, that exactly what I need. I can build circuits but am not
knowledgeable in design. Does anyone have the schematic of the PS/2
to USB conversion? A look will let me know if I can do it, ie
incorporate it in the device insteads of having to hook up an
accessory.

This is about at simple as it gets: http://www.semtech.com/pdf/sh3301.pdf

You will need a controller like that. It's in a 44-QFP but most of the pins
aren't used. An example circuit is included in the datasheet.

Any possibility of moving the device to a pure USB environment instead of
adding more components to do a conversion? USB microcontrollers are pretty
common and usable these days.

Thanks again. Moving to a pure USB direction is where I want to go.
But the engineering contractor gave me a ridiculous price and your
link will provide me an invaluable bargaining position. Right now
money is a problem and I don't want to spend serious money on the
conversion yet. One fallback position is to use a USB daughterboard
and have only the USB port on the backplate of the box.
