Problems with Panasonic multisynch monitor

Hello,

I have a 21" Panasonic PanaSync Pro C2192P monitor that owkred for about 7
years. Recently, the screen stays black although I can hear the ping sound
(degaussing) when I turn it on, and when I turn the computer on I can hear a
clicking sound as if the monitor can detect the display card when it sends
signals to it. Even the electrostatic discharge sound can be heard from the
screen as if electrons are being sent down the tube. Apart from these
audible signs, the screen doesn't show any viewable signs whatsoever. I
tried to play with the degaussing buttons, etc., however, nothing happens.
Does anyone in this NG have an idea what might be causing this? I know
everything about computer repair, howver, I'm an idiot when it comes to CRT.
Is the tube dead? If so, how much is considered reasonable to pay for a
tube repalcement?
Thanks,

Martha

Sounds like it could be that the tube heaters are not lighting up, I can't
say why, without taking a look but maybe an open circuit rectifier in the
power supply rail, or maybe even simpler, a bad solder joint on the CRT neck
board. there's a few other possibilities. Doesn't sound too expensive to me.
It's just possible that the CRT could be faulty but that's way down the list
of suspects and given the price of new kit these days I wouldn't recommend
you even think of a replacement tube. Why not ring a repair shop and ask for
a quote up front. If you're planning to mess about yourself you have to
spend a bit of time studying here first.

Does the menu show up? Check the cable? Try another monitor?

Nothing shows up on the screen, not even a blink (total darkness). I used
different cables, computers, etc. I remember when this problem first
started there was a frying odor from the back, but this doesn't happen
anymore. Presently, when I turn it on I hear a ding sound soon followed by
a sqwish sound. When I connect a computer to it, I hear a clicking sound.
When I touch the screen from the outside, I don't get the usual
electrostatic tickling.

Thanks,

Martha

I have a 21" Panasonic PanaSync Pro C2192P monitor that
worked for about 7 ears. Recently, the screen stays black
although I can hear the ping sound (degaussing)
"Ping"? Isn't it more like a hum or buzz from the degaussing coil?

when I turn the computer on I can hear a clicking sound as if
the monitor can detect the display card when it sends signals
to it. Even the electrostatic discharge sound can be heard
from the screen as if electrons are being sent down the tube.
Apart from these audible signs, the screen doesn't show any
viewable signs whatsoever.

I doubt it's the CRT because Panasonic CRTs are very good, but a bad
CRT means getting a new monitor because it's far cheaper (Envision
monitors are actually decent, one was $50 after rebate last Friday).
I'd look at the electrolytic capacitors around the flyback circuit,
including the ones for the voltages to the CRT grids, the spot killer
(has been troublesome in certain Panasonics), and the CRT filament
heater.

You may want to contact Panasonic parts at 1-800-833-9626 for a
service manual because they often sell them very cheaply, maybe just
$15, delivered. If they no longer have it, try some of the Russian
web sites that carry schematics ("schema"), like www.rlocman.com.ru ,
http://rv6llh.rsuh.ru/shema.htm , and http://rv6llh.rsuh.ru/shema2.htm
..

Don't bother calling Panasonic tech support about this, except for
laughs because they know absolutely nothing about monitors ("I don't
know what convergence are."), and the person in charge, Herman Gopaul,
is not of the highest integrity, to put it mildly. Also it's risky to
send a monitor to Panasonic because you may get something back that's
in worse shape. For example, the first "refurbished" monitor they
sent to me had been dropped by them, damaging the bottom enough so
that the monitor couldn't stand up by itself. Normally, damage like
this occurs during shipping, but in this case Panasonic dropped the
monitor at their facility and then placed it in the box (pieces of
plastic missing from box, yet box OK and virtually airtight). Also 2
wires from the CRT ground were left dangling inside rather than
plugged into the earth ground terminals. The second monitor arrived
with a badly repaired gouge on front, a fairly large metal shield
under the power inverter transformer left out, and a capacitor for the
CRT heater power not soldered right (picture blinked bright-dim and
tilted whenever monitor was tapped, left 1-2" of screen abruptly
different brightness than rest). All of this wonderful service was
done by Heartland Services in Elgin, Illinois. I don't know if
they're an outside company or part of Panasonic, but Panasonic
explicitly said, "We're not going to tell you." All of this may
explain why Panasonic's Better Business Rating is now
"unsatisfactory."
