Problems with DVD player bought in Japan.

ATHLETE DVD-A100S dvd player.

Greetings group.
Happy new year!!!!!!

The daughter of a friend brought back the above DVD player from Japan.
The player requires a mains voltage of 100 volts.

A DVD was found inside the machine. This was a copied DVD that was
burnt in Australia and sent to her in Japan where it played fine.
The movie is "EQUILIBRIUM"

After finding a suitable stepdown transformer in my junk pile, I
connected it to 2 tv's and only got a B+W picture from the DVD
I found in the player.
All the DVD player onscreen menus were in Japanese.

I then connected it to the friends tv, this showed a perfect
colour picture.
I am guessing the player outputs a NTSC signal, and my friends tv
is able to show both NTSC and PAL.

We finally figured out how to change the onscreen display to english.

Here is the problem we have now.

His daughter bought him a copy of "ANALYZE THIS".
The player will only display the following:-
REGION ERROR.
PLAYBACK IS NOT AUTHORIZED IN THIS REGION.
PLEASE EJECT THE DISC.

Both discs will play in another DVD player.

I borrowed "BRAVEHEART" and "ENTRAPMENT".
The player only shows the following when these two
discs are inserted:-
PLAYBACK FEATURE MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE ON THIS DISC.
PLEASE EJECT THE DISC.

His daughter believes the player is a multi zone machine.

Can anybody assist.

Thanks,
Russell Griffiths.

Russell,

Obviously if you get the message "REGION ERROR. PLAYBACK IS NOT AUTHORIZED
IN THIS REGION. PLEASE EJECT THE DISC." then the player is not a multi zone
machine. (I THINK Japan and Australia are in the same zone [Asia-Pacific?],
which would explain why the DVD played properly).

I went and had a look on the internet and the only hit I could get on the
model number was for a Panasonic A100S (I couldn't find a reference to a DVD
player manufacturer called ATHLETE - are you sure its not a rebadged
Panasonic - some other brands on site below are Panasonic clones). Anyway
the website was http://www.btinternet.com/~bryan.welsh/dvdfaq.htm , and has
some useful information.

The position on the site
(http://www.btinternet.com/~bryan.welsh/dvdfaq.htm#cona100) has useful
information and contacts for various countries. They may be able to assist
in identifying manufacturer and advising what mods need to be done.

Hi,
Earlier model DVDs were zoned despite being capable of all zone operation.
If you have the manual I'd check that, as it should have the key sequence
required to access the hidden menus and how to set it for multi zone
operation, assuming of course it's capable.

Cheers
Greg

I've always found this site handy for region hacks
http://www.dvd365.net/hacks/hacklist.htm

alas no sign of a Athlete there, it's probably a rebadged model of
something else
