Problems playing audio CD's in PC

Hello people

I have a problem:

A certain audio CD will suddenly get "stuck" - as in a scratched CD - on my PC'
CD drive. The cd plays 100% fine in a standalone CD player.
The problem is: the CD has no scratches.

I found this problem after I tried to "rip" the CD to WAVE files for conversion
to MP3 format.

Is this a problem of PC CD drive or of disk?

Perhaps the disk has a defect that your audio CD player is willing to
ignore, while the PC CD-ROM may not be able to work around it?

I've seen marginal disks that played fine in a regular audio player but
failed in a PC or most "skip protected" players.

Do you have digital audio output enabled for your CD-ROM drive, or is the
audio coming from a special small cable from the drive to your soundcard?
Check your operating system's configuration to be sure of what you are
using. I find it better to use the analog audio output as there isn't much
difference in sound quality and the bus to which the drive is attached is
not kept as busy.

and audio. If it fails, you can probably be sure it is the drive that has a
problem. If there are no problems, then the disc is probably to blame for
your troubles.

This is exactly what I am thinking. The CD is just with small scratches.

The audio is coming from the small cable.
Windows 98 is not set to do digital audio output, as I think the sound of analog
output is louder.

I can blame the disk, then.
Data CD's work fine even when I do heavy access to them (e.g. installing
software or running a live Linux distro).
