Ugh! Every time I add or rearrange kit in the office, I find
myself spending far too much time juggling network cable lengths!
I have a pair of 24p switches -- one at each end of my work bench
(about 20 ft x 3 ft). My kit is under the benches (on the floor
for towers, SANs, rack-mounted kit, etc.) or on top of the bench.
[Yeah, I have a lot of drops in a very small area!]
To eliminate excess service loops, I try to select (or make!)
cables that are exactly as long as the wiring distance from
the device in question to the appropriate switch (with a bit
extra for service loop, depending on how easily the device can
be moved for access).
There\'s a significant difference between using a 7 ft cable
where a 5 ft is \"best fitted\". Even worse to go to 10 ft or
15 ft!
Ideally, I\'d just like to buy a couple of cables in each
length from ~5 ft to ~20 ft in maybe 1 or 2 ft increments.
Then, just pick the appropriate length based on where the
device is located.
But, most premade cables seem to be intended for use where
a few feet of excess cable can be hidden behind *A* desk
(not lots of excess cables hidden behind that desk!)
Does someone make custom cables in these few quantities
for reasonable dollars? Or, should I just resign myself to
making what I need, when I need it?
