In what format do I have to save PCB and schematics so that they can be
opened with Protel 99? (using DXP 2004)

orange,
Not sure about the schematic version but the PCB is saved as
Binary 4 or Binary 4.0. Can't recall the precise designated
wording. There are approx. 3 Protel formats grouped together,
whichever one is "4" something.

You will actually loose quite a bit of info if you've used any of the new
features in DXP. Even some of the polygon's may give you grief. I would
actually advise against it unless you have a very good reason. Especially
since there's the free viewer for the customer these days.
I wouldn't do it myself unless I could load the design and DRC / check the
resultant for correctness.
