Hi,

A friend just gave me a View Sonic P817 from his work. Work was
throwing it out because of the erratic screen jumping. I think it
might be blooming, but I don't understand much of the technical
definitions I've read. But it's the exact same effect that's described
in this post:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=8fb11099.0301250130.15518dfa%40posting.google.com

The Monitor "will JUMP/EXPAND 0.25-1.5" accompanied by a SOFT
CLICK/POP in back. This is UNIFORM scaling in all directions. Then the
size will rapidly (<<1sec) and smoothly drift back to approx the
original size and the drifting will continue for a few seconds until
the size tightens down to normal."

We've got an electrician friend visiting tomorrow and we're going to
let him have a look at it. We're wondering if there's anyway to fix it
or at least improve it?

Thanks,
Angela

Most likely there may be a cold solder connection, or some parts in the
power supply or the scan amplifier sections that have become unstable. An
experienced tech with the service manuals, and proper set-up should be able
to service this for you. If the CRT is in good condition, it may pay to
send the monitor to an authorized Viewsonic service centre to have it
properly repaired.

If your electrician friend is not experienced in monitor servicing, there
will not be much he can do, unless it is a simple loose connection or
something like that. Most of these faults are not visible by eye, and
require proper diagnostics to locate the defective parts.

Try the main filter capacitor, it's the biggest one
on the main board! 150 microfarad @ 400 volts
DC I think! Rono!
