Proto boards are barbaric. So are drum machines.

Have you worked with the WizNet ethernet chip?

I have used this module from China:

It uses the ENC2856, the module connects via serial I/O data and clock.

Normally I use that chip directly:

Interfaces nicely with the Microchip PICs, wrote an UDP stack for it in PIC asm.
