Pic programming

I have built the David Tait Pic programmer and have used it for a long time.
Suddenly I can't get it to work properly. It seems unstable and will only
program the first adresses the rest are filled with 3FFF. I have rebuilt the
circuit I have tried different computers I think I have tried almost
everything, it doesn't work!

Any ideas?

is the PIC device still good, has it failed after multiple writes?

ZIF socket worn out, one pin gone bad
