Philips VCR Not Responding to Controls

Model VRA631AT21. I do not have the schematic for it. It will accept
a tape and auto-start playing as it should, but it will not respond to
any front-panel or remote control commands. The customer said there
was a "spark between the VCR and his finger" just before it quit. Any
ideas?

Well...... no way to know for sure what is wrong without you doing some
preliminary technical troubleshooting at your end. First, if it has a
"rental" mode" you need to disable it. Also disassemble the VCR and look
at the front panel and how it interfaces with the main pcb...... cracked
circuit boards? bad or loose interconnecting ribbon cables or connectors?
etc, etc.

Hi!

If there was a spark between finger and the VCR button(s) before the VCR
died--then it is most likely bad news for the VCR. Sounds to me like
something got blasted with static electricity. I had the same unfortunate
circumstance with my ceiling fan control not all that long ago. Got up to
turn it off and BLAM! Now some buttons have no effect while others do
strange things.

....had a cordless phone go the same way...was holding it and touched the
stove...visible spark jumped about 1/2"...phone worked, but wouldn't 'talk.'
I never got around to swapping out the electret mike to see if that solved
the problem, as my feeling was that it must've taken out more than just
that.
