Philips IDTV

Hey guys,
I have a philllips IDTV, Rear projection TV (46")

It is the model with a double screen - i.e 2 pieces of plastic layered
onto each other.

The top sheet has a slight black tinge to it - to enable you to
actually watch it with the lights on!!

The problem I have is that when cleaning the screen - as advised with
a damp cloth - no cleaning products, the black stuff that seems to
have just been sprayed onto the screen - on the outside of all places
(thankyou to the bright people at philips) has started to come off -
the result......white patches all over my screen.

you cant notice it when sat straight in front of it but is there any
way to repair it as white smudges are not attractive when sat at an
angle!!

cheers

You have three choices:
1)live with it
2)attempt to repair the screen, possibly using an ink roller (used in block
printing and fingerprinting); I've never seen it successfully done
3)replace it, hopefully with a used one from a local TV shop.

Agreed, except for #2. I dont think a roller will work, FWIK the valleys
between the protrusions of the surface are what's painted (?) .

The only way to fix something like that would be to pour the ink or paint on it
and them wipe it off, leaving it deposited where it's needed.

It is probably best to get a used lenticular in this case, in fact an older one
without the paint would be desirable IMO. Then this would not happen again.

I would try to stick with the correct fresnel for the cabinet, but even the
older lenticular will still, along with the frensel, absorb enough ambient
light to yield a good enough contrast ratio.

Granted it won't be quite absolutely good as new, but the cost will be much
lower and like I said, it won't happen again.

cheers for that, does anyone know what would happen if i was to just
take the black stuff off the screen totally???? would this just
compound the situation and make the thing unwatchable???

Black Ink Roller sounds a bit strange and ominous - bit extreme for
me!!

Phillips dunno what we are on about when phonin them and they fob us
off to the local tv repair man, who wants to charge Ł300 for a new
front screen!!!

anyhoo, any other ideas?

Actually, the "valleys" are not painted, it's the "hills", and I have several
times successfully repaired small spots of the screens where the black lines
have been rubbed or scraped off by using a Sharpie marking pen.
