A black Gaston County Jail inmate is accused of attacking a white inmate
because of his race.
Tamarcus D. Phillips, 17, of Charlotte, punched, hit and choked
17-year-old Joshua Wayne Mote in the county jailâs E Block on Friday,
according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Phillips also allegedly threw
a deodorant stick at Mote.
Both teenagers are awaiting trial on sexual assault charges. Police say
Phillips raped a pre-teen girl while staying at With Friends, a Gastonia
emergency shelter for disadvantaged, homeless and at-risk children. The
April assault on the young resident was the first reported rape at the
shelter.
Mote, of Dallas, is accused of molesting and sexually assaulting an
11-year-old boy. He was arrested on those charges last November.
Phillips was charged Saturday with ethnic intimidation, a Class 1
misdemeanor that state law defines as assaulting a person, defacing
property or threatening someone because of race, color, religion,
nationality or country of origin.
Gaston County Magistrate Judge C.D. Faulkenberry set his bond at $500
for the ethnic intimidation charge. He remains in jail under a $1
million secured bond on the rape charge.
